Mike Wilson Calls on Attorney General to Repeal Obama’s Health Care Law

Bowling Green, KY April 12, 2010
Today Mike Wilson is calling on Attorney General Jack Conway to join Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum in a bipartisan lawsuit to repeal the Health Care Reform Bill President Obama signed into law on March 23rd. The lawsuit was initially joined by 12 other state's Attorney Generals against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Treasury and the U.S. Department of Labor stating the Health Care Reform bill signed into law by President Obama on is unconstitutional.

“The new law infringes upon our constitutional rights by mandating we as citizens must have qualifying health care coverage or pay a tax penalty. There are no enumerated powers anywhere in the Constitution for the government to force people to buy insurance or to allow the government to intervene in the relationships between patients and physicians,” said Wilson. By imposing such a mandate, the law exceeds the powers of the United States under Article I of the Constitution and violates the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution. Additionally, the tax penalty required under the law constitutes an unlawful direct tax in violation of Article I, sections 2 and 9 of the Constitution,” said Wilson.

The lawsuit states the health care reform law infringes on the sovereignty of the states by imposing burdensome new operating rules that Kentucky must follow as well as requiring our state to spend hundreds of millions of additional dollars without providing funds or resources to help subsidize the cost of implementation of the law. This burden comes at a time where we in Kentucky face severe budget cuts to offset shortfalls in an already-strained budget.

“Please join me and thousands of Kentuckians in calling on Attorney General Jack Conway to join this cause, we will not stand by and watch, as he does nothing to combat such a grave violation of our constitutional rights,” said Wilson.

After a lot of thought, prayer, and consideration from my family, I have decided to seek the Republican nomination as candidate for the Kentucky Senate seat of the 32nd District. This is the senate seat that was held by Brett Guthrie and is now filled by Democrat Mike Reynolds of Bowling Green.

My plan is to first win the primary election in May of 2010 and then begin a vigorous campaign to win the senate seat by defeating Mike Reynolds in the general election in November of 2010. My campaign starts today as I begin to raise both committed votes and committed dollars. It has been estimated that I will need $50,000 raised for the primary election and at least $150,000 for the general election --quite a daunting task!

Many of you know me already. You know my character, the things I stand for. But in case you don't know, let me lay it out. I am a fiscal conservative and I believe in financial responsibility, balanced budgets, smaller government, and lower taxes. I am also a social conservative. I am pro-life, I support traditional marriage, and freedom of religious expression. I am opposed to expanded gambling in Kentucky, and as a sportsman, I am also a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

My grandfather served in WWI and my father served in the USAF just after WWII. I also served in the USMC for 8 ½ years which gives me a great appreciation for our servicemen and women. They serve our country and state every day whether locally or on foreign soil. Freedom has never been free and is always paid for at the greatest expense, by the blood of a nation's people. We owe our very existence to these brave men and women. I believe someone said it best when they said the cost of freedom is eternal vigilance and the best deterrent to attack is a strong military.

I want to thank those of you who have encouraged me to take this path and have supported me as I have contemplated and wrestled over this decision. To those that asked, “Why would you want to do this?” I would say it's not really a question of wanting to, but more a sense that I am compelled to. I don't need to run for office for any selfish reason of notoriety, or some false idea of power, and I certainly do not want to do it for money. I love my country and believe I can no longer stand by and watch it go in its present direction without getting involved in a more tangible way. I have been contemplating this decision for over two years and I now believe it's time for me to step up, and stand up and be counted for the principles and values I hold, --values which I believe, the great majority of you hold as well. I want to be a part of leaving a legacy of freedom to my children and grandchildren--a precious trust of freedom and responsibility that has been passed onto me. To be elected to a public office means being a servant of the people, and too many politicians have forgotten what it means to be a servant. But I cannot serve without the support and accountability of people like you.

My greatest need at this point will be to build a core team of volunteers who would like to be a part of helping with my campaign. That will take many forms as it moves forward. The most immediate need will be financial. If you or anyone you know is able to contribute in any amount please may make your check payable to “Mike Wilson Campaign Fund”. You will also need to print and fill out the form I have attached and send it to me at this address:

Even if you live out of state you can still contribute to the campaign, but federal law still mandates that contributions not exceed $1000 per person per election. Again, let me say that any amount is appreciated.

But money isn't everything in a politcal campaign. Another way to contribute is helping me build name recognition and voter support. You can do this through talking to others you know and telling them about me and what I stand for. Of course on election day your vote will be most important of all.

As we approach the primary election if you would like to be part of the team that helps put up signs, does phone calling, or walking our district door to door, please reply to this e-mail with your current contact information and how you would like to help.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, please remember me and my family in your prayers as we walk this new and challenging road. Our hearts desire is to extend our lives in the service of others and we know we can't do that in our own strength alone. May God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,

Mike Wilson
